After a week of winter storms in December 2008, I drove out the Apache Trail to Tortilla Flat.
The Mission of Boyce Thompson Arboretum is to instill in people an appreciation of plants through the fostering of educational, recreational, research, and conservation opportunities associated with arid-land plants.
Hans Lauridsen is assembling a collection of vintage airplanes at the Buckeye Municipal Airport in Arizona. There are plans to build a 30,000 square foot hangar at Gila Bend to house the collection.
Canyon Lake is located east of Phoenix on the Salt River, between Saguaro Lake and Apache Lake. The landscape is dominated by eroded volcanic tuff from a giagantic caldera eruption that occurred about twenty-nine million years ago.
Casa Grande Airport, Arizona hosts the Cactus and Copperstate Fly-ins
The Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is located near the town of Coolidge, Arizona. The big house was constructed of caliche mud by the Hohokam people in the 1200s and 1300s. A culture of communal irrigation fed agriculture propsered in the area for many decades. The compound was abandoned for inknown reasons before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s. The descendents of the Hohokam may be the Tohono O'odham people.
On the first Saturday of every month (except June, July, August and September), Coolidge Aviation, LLC sponsors a fly-in. Breakfast is served by the Coolidge Lion’s Club in front of the main hangar at the airport.
Coconino County is home to Flagstaff, Oak Creeek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon National Monument, Grand Falls, and many other scenic locations.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is home to the Fairchild Republic A-10A Warthogs of the 355th Wing, Lockheed EC-130Hs of the 43rd Electronics Combat Squadron, and aircraft of the US Customs and Border Protection Service. Due to the good flying weather, it often hosts visiting aircraft from around the country. It is also home to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), the place where US military aircraft go when they are retired. Some of those aircraft are refurbished and used again.
Deer Valley is the susiest geneeral aviation airport in the United States. It is a popular destination for barnstorming warbirds.
Falcon Field is home to the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.

Four Peaks is a very distinctive landmark visible to the east of Phoenix.
Barrett Hochaus built a radio-controlled model of Howard Hughes giant Flying Boat, popularly known as the Spruce Goose, with a wing span of nearly ten feet. It is powered by four electric motors. Despite its large size, it wieghs less than seven pounds. It made its maiden flight at the Gilbert Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, January 22, 2011.
The Goldwater Ranges, south of Gila Bend, are used for bombing and gunnery training for military aircraft based around Arizona. Frequent visitors include General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcons from Luke Air Foirce Base and Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
Many retired airliners are stored at the Goodyear Airport.
The Nature Conservancy maintains a desert river habitat at the Hassayampa River Preserve near Wickenberg, Arizona.
The Airship Ventures Zeppelin NT N704LZ Eureka arrived at Marana Regional Airport on Friday, October 14, 2011. It spent the following week moored to its portable mast.
The former Williams Air Force Base is now known as Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. In addition to serving as a civil airport, it is frequently visited by military aircraft taking advantage of its limited traffic. Several pilot training schools operate at the airport. Allegiant Air provides passenger service to airports around the country on a fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-83s. Boeing has a test facility for hot weather tests and Advanced Training Systems Incorporated refurbushes Douglas A-4 Skyhawks.
Mingus Mountain overlooks the town of Cottonwood in the Verde Valley.
The Mogollon Rim marks the southern boundary of the Colorado Plateau. It rises neraly 2,000 feet above the region to the south.
Forest Houses is a compound of cabins ini Oak Creek Canyon. Each cabin is different. My sister has been renting cabins at Forest Houses for many years. I joined her for a few days at Cloud House, on the bank of Oak Creek.

The Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest non-government funded aviation and space museums in the world! Featuring over 350 historical aircrafts, from a Wright Flyer to a 787 Dreamliner. Sitting on 80 acres the museum opened its doors to the public in May of 1976.
Red Rock Crossing is located on Oak Creek near Sedona. It features good views of Cathedral Rock, which is a popular subject for photographers and painters. It is also popular with new agers who meditate at the Cathedral Rock Vortex and build numerous rock cairns.
Oak Creek meanders through Red Rock State Park near Sedona. The creek is lined with Sycamore and Cottonwood Trees. Several hiking trails provide access to the hills that surround the park.
Saguaro Lake is located east of Phoenix on the Salt River, downriver of Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. The landscape is dominated by Four Peaks and the Goldfield Mountains. It is reached by way of the Bush Highway.
The Salt River flows down from Roosevelt Lake through a series of reservoirs to and through the city of Phoenix.
The Parada del Sol is an annual parade through Scottsdale.
The Sedona Airport is situated among dramatic red rock cliffs that restrict take-offs and landings to one direction.
The Sonoran Desert National Monument encompasses 487,000 acres southwest of Phoenix. Much of the monument is wilderness with no motorized access.
Winter storms dropped snow on the Superstition Mountains and Four Peaks in February 2013.
Tonto Natural Bridge is the largest travertine bridge in the United States. It is located north of Payson off Highway 87.
The Grand Canyon Planes of Fame Museum at Valle Airport, Arizona hosts the annual High Country Warbirds Fly-in in June.
The Verde Valley is home to Camp Verde and the Verde Canyon Railroad.
Watson Lake is a man-made reservoir nestled among granitic bouolders near Prescott, Arizona. It is a popular recreational destination, offering fishing, bird-watching, boulder climbing, hiking, and boating. Kayaks and canoes can be rented. I visited Watson Lake on January 24.
The Grand Canyon Railway at Williams, Arizona commemorates National Train Day with a series of short Cataract Creek Rambler excursions pulled by their Baldwin Mikado 2-8-2 #4960 steam locomotive.
H.A. Clark Memorial Field at Williams, Arizona hosted a fly-in on Saturday May 7, 2011. It attracted several vintage general aviation airplanes from around the state.
Winslow-Lindberg Airport is home to an air tanker station. On Monday, June 13, 2011, A Lockheed P-3 Orion, a pair of Lochkeed P-2 Neptunes and a Skikorsky S-64 Skycrane visited the airport to support operations against the Wallow Fire.
Little Painted Desert County Park and Homol'ovi State Park ancestral Hopi villages are located northeast of Winslow, Arizona on Highway 87.

The Antelope Valley has a rich aviation heritage. Air Force Plant 42 has been the site of the first flights of many important and novel aircraft. Aircraft flying out of Edwards Air Force Base are often seen in the skies overhead. There are several places where you can see vintage airplanes displayed in the Antelope Valley. The Antelope Valley is also home to spectacular displays of springtime wildflowers.

The Airship Ventures Zeppelin N704LZ cruised across Santa Barbara County on its way from Long Beach to its home base at Moffett Field on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. It is seen here over Buellton at 1:30 PM. It was cruising at an altitude of 1,900 feet and a speed of 29 knots.
When I was young, observing the progress of the construction of Claude Bell's dinosaurs at Cabazon was a highlight of family trips between Phoenix and southern California.

On Wednesday May 31, the Evergreen International 747-273C Supertanker flew from Boise, Idaho to the San Bernardino Airport with a load of 20,000 gallons of water that it dropped in a demonstration of its potential as a firefighter. This was the final demonstration in a tour that took the Supertanker to Sacramento California, the Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland, Scott Air Force Base Illinois, Tallahassee Florida, and Boise.

The Santa Paula Airport hosted a two day Airfair over the weekend of August 6 - 7, as America's favorite small town airport turned 75.
Aerial tankers fought the Day Fire for many days. On Monday, September 25, the tanker action was concentrated over Santa Paula Canyon, just a few miles from Ojai. Lockheed P-3 Orions from the Santa Barbara Air Attack Station shared the sky with Lockheed P-2 Neptunes from the Fox Field Air Attack Station. Bell 205 and 212 Hueys paraded back and forth above the Santa Paula River.

The Southern California Air Logistics Center was formerly George Air Force Base. It is home to a Boeing test facility, Heavylift Helicopters, and a large number of retired airliners.

In 1946, my father, Richard Lockett, worked for General Electric in Schenectady, New York. He and my mother Dorothy Lockett attended an open house at the General Electric Air Research Laboratory on June 22, 1946. It was an overcast day with intermittent rain. The event featured a variety of prototype airplanes and helicopters and some unusual modified airplanes. The first jet airmail service was carried by a pair of Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars that departed from the open house.

The airshow at Tushino Aerodrome in Moscow on August 18, 1996 featured ultralight aircraft, parachutists, Mil- Mi-2 helicopters, and aerobatic airplanes.
