The White Mountain Scenic Railway owned another
2-8-2 locomotive, the old Samta Maria Valley No. 100. It was
later moved to Heber, Utah.
It snowed heavily during the 1971 fall color
run of the White Mountain Scenic Railway. Engine 36 was built in 1930.
This ride on the White Mountain Scenic Railway
gave a good impression of what riding the trans-siberian railway
must have been like.
A short while later engine No. 36 was sold to a
new McCulloch housing development in northern Arizona. For a
short while it was used to take prospective property buyers on
tours of the development.
The California Western Railroad operates the
Skunk Trains between Fort Bragg and Willits, California. Engine
No. 45 is a 2-8-2 Baldwin. It was built in 1924. It is seen here
at the Fort Bragg Station.

Durango & Silverton Narrow
Gauge Railroad engine No. 478 is part of a fleet of 2-8-2 steam
engines operated between Durango and Silverton, Colorado. It is a
K-28 class narrow gauge engine.

Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad provides year round train service
operating a historical train with rolling stock indigenous to the
line. The locomotives used to pull today’s train remain 100%
coal-fired, steam-operated. The locomotives are 1923-25 vintage
and are maintained in original condition.
Santa Fe engine No. 3751 is a Northern class 4-8-4 Baldwin. It was built in 1927 for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. She was retired from revenue service in 1953.
Engine No. 3751 pulled the California Limited excursion train from Los Angeles to Bakersfield on December 28, 1991 and returned to LA on December 30.

Santa Fe 3751 is now in the collection of the San Bernardino Railroad
Historical Society. 
Shay No. 2 is operated by the Sierra Railroad of the Railtown
1897 Historic Park in Jamestown, California. Three steam
cylinders are mounted vertically just forward of the cab. The
power is transmitted to four-wheeled drive trucks at both the
front and rear through a series of gears.
This Shay was built for Hutchinson Lumber Co. in Oroville, California in 1922. It carried Lima Locomotive Works shop number 3177. It was last operated by Georgia-Pacific Corporation of Feather Falls, California.

Union Pacific Challenger No. 3985 paid a visit
to Southern California in August 2000. I chased it from Pomona to

Santa Fe steam
locomotive 3751 made an
unassisted run from Union Station to San Bernardino to be displayed at the
rededication of the depot.
Fillmore hosted Railfest 2009 over the weekend of March 28 - 29. The Fillmore & Western Sespe #1 0-4-0 steam engine was running on live steam for the first time in years. A pair of EMG F7 diesels pulled an excursion train on runs to Santa Paula. A Metrolink train pulled by a MotivePower MPXpress locomotive was on display. They demonstrated the operation of the Canadian turntable. A miniature live steam 2-4-0 locomotive made runs along a short stretch of scale track.
The Grand Canyon Railway at Williams, Arizona commemorated National Train Day with a series of short Cataract Creek Rambler excursions pulled by their Baldwin Mikado 2-8-2 #4960 steam locomotive on May 8 and 9, 2010.
The Grand Canyon Railway at Williams, Arizona commemorated National Train Day with a series of short Cataract Creek Rambler excursions pulled by their Baldwin Mikado 2-8-2 #4960 steam locomotive on May 7 and 8, 2011. The price of a ticket was just $15. The excursions ran hourly from 10:00 AM.
Union Pacific Steam Locomotive 844 pulled the Grand Canyon State Steam Special excursion train from Tucson to Phoenix on Saturday, November 12. Union Pacific 844 was the last steam locomotive delivered to Union Pacific. It is the only steam locomotive in the U.S. that was never retired. After ending freight operations, Union Pacific has kept it operational for excursions.
On Saturday, November 12, 2011, I caught the train near Recker Road in Gilbert. I waited for it to depart the Gilbert Station at the Guadalupe Road Crossing. I raced ahead of it to photograph it on the bridge across the Salt River.
On Tuesday, November 15, 2011, I waited for the train at the bridge across the Salt River. I caught it again near Recker Road and at the Florence Avenue crossing in Coolidge. I photographed the crew servicing it in Coolidge, and then headed down to Picacho to catch it crossing Milligan Road. I waited on the Highway 87 overpass for the train to depart from Picacho, then skipped the Casa Grande stop. I drove west on Interstate 8 to Gila Bend and backtracked on Highway 238 to the Maricopa Mountains.
Union Pacific Railroad's restored locomotive 4014 Big Boy toured the United States in October 2019. On October 16, 2019 it journeyed from Yuma to Casa Grande, Arizona. I caught it at Tacna, Aztec, Gila Bend, and the Maricopa Hills. It pulled a train consisting of vintage Union Pacific rail cars.
