Camarillo Airshow

The Camarillo Airport hosted an airshow over the weekend of August 18 - 19. The airshow was sponsored by Chapter 723 of the Experimental Aircraft Association and featured flying performances by the airplanes of the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.

North American P-51D Mustang, N514DK is registered to DK Warbirds at Las Vegas. Its North American construction number is 124-48311. Its orginal Army Air Force serial number was 45-11558. It was registered as N6175C by Aerodynamics Inc. of Pontiac, Michigan in 1963. James Gorman of Mansfield, Ohio bought it in 1966 and then sold it to Herbert Rupp of Port Salerno, Florida. It crashed in Georgia in 1967 and was rebuilt using parts of 44-74829 and 44-73822. It was registered to John Dilly of Auburn, Indiana in 1969. John Rutherford of Fort Worth, Texas acquired it in 1978. It was sold to Courtesy Aircraft of Rockford, Illinois in 1982 and then to Joe Kasperoff at Montebello, California a year later. It crashed on take-off at Van Nuys on August 6, 1985. Bill Jones registered it as N151BJ for a short while before receiving its current registration in August 1999.
Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat, N1078Z Minsi III. Its construction number is A-5634. John Sandberg recovered it from the Fergus Falls Airport in Minnesota in 1962. It was subsequently owned by Lloyd Nolan from 1972 to 1973 and Ed Messick from April 9, 1973 to 1990. The Confederate Air Force acquired it in 1990. It has been registered to the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum since 1991. It is part of the collection of the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and is based at Camarillo.
Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat, N7825C originally wore Navy BuNo 122674 and it carries that number again today. Its Grumman construction number is D.1227. It was built in 1948. E. Weiner of Los Angeles registered it under its current tail number in 1958. Leo Demeers of Aurora, Oregon bought it in 1963 and sold it to Larry Hamilton and Hamilton Aircraft of Sonoma, California the same year. Richard Tobey of Newport Beach, California in acquired it in 1966 and then sold it to Paul Finefrock of Hobart, Oklahoma in 1969. Gary Levitz of Long Beach, California picked it up later that year. It has belonged to the Confederate Air Force since 1972. It underwent a major rebuild from 1989 to 1991. It made its first flight after the rebuild on December 17, 1991. It is now registered to the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum and based with the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at Camarillo.
North American SNJ-5 Texan, N1038A War Dog was built in 1944. Its U.S. Navy Bureau Number was 90917 and it still wears that number on its tail. It has been a familiar sight on the airshow circuit for many years. It is owned and piloted by John Collver.
North American SNJ-5 Texan, N89014 was ordered by the Army Air Corps as 41-34524, but it was diverted to the U. S. Navy as BuNo 84865 in 1943. Its construction number is 88-16676. It spent some time in the service of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. Dennis G. Buehn and Warbirds West of Compton, California recovered it from Japan in October 1977 and registered it as N89014. Brandon O'Brien bought it in 1979. The former Confederate Air Force of Harlingen, Texas acquired it in 1986. It is painted in the markings of a training plane as used by BTU-3 at Sanfley Field, Florida in 1954-54.
North American PBJ-1J (B-25J) Mitchell, N5865V is currently undergoing restoration. Its construction number is 108-35313. It was ordered by the Army Air Force as 44-30988, but it was delivered to U.S. Navy As BuNo 35857 on March 20, 1945. The War Assets Administration ordered its disposal on February 28, 1947. Saint Louis Flying Services of St. Louis-Krats, Missouri registered it as NL5865V on July 1, 1947. Continental Airlines registered it as N5865V in January 1948 and used it as a crew trainer. Oilfield Aviation Corporation of Houston, Texas acquired it in April 1950 and converted it to an executive transport. Atlantic Aviation Corporation of Wilmington, Delaware bought it in April 1960 and sold it to Silvio J. Adano of South Merrimack, New Hampshire in April 1961. Graubart Aviation of Valparaiso, Indiana acquired it in August 1961 and sold it to Aero Enterprises of Elkhart, Indiana in May 1962. Robert Gure of Chicago, Ilinois registered it as N5865V in August 1962 and sold it to Air Services of Addison, Texas in July 1963. Air Services of Addison, Texas acquired it in July 1963 and sold it to Robert A. Mathews of Jacksonville, North Carolina in January 1971, but it sat derelict at the JacksonvilleAirport from 1972 to 1979. Tom Reilly of Orlando, Florida bought it in 1978. and sold it to Craig Tims of Conifer, Colorado and Roanoke, Texas in 1981. It made its first flight after restoration at Kissimee, Florida in 1982. It flew for the Confederate Air Force as Big Ole Brew 'n Little Ole You. It has been registered to the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum since 1991. It arrived at the Camarillo Airport in April 1993. It was going to be restored as Pride of the Yanks, but as paint was stripped was discovered to be a former PBJ, so it will be restored in Marine Corps colors as Semper Fi.
North American AT-6D Texan, N8540P Miss Universe has been registered to Jason Somes of Simi Valley since October 26, 2005.
Curtiss C-46F Commando, N53594 China Doll served the Army Air Force as 44-78663. Its Curtiss construction number is 22486. Riddle Airlines operated it from August 1960 to July 1963. Zantop Air Transport operated it from July 1963 to September 1966. After flying for Ortiner Air Services it was acquired by the Confederate Air Force of Midland, Texas in 1991. It is registered to the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum and based with the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at Camarillo.
Nanchang CJ-6A, N250RL was manufactured in 1968. Its construction number is 2432066.
Nanchang CJ-6A, N114DZ was manufactured in 1967. Its construction number is 2132018.
Nanchang CJ-6A, N313YK was built in 1964. Its serial number is 1032013.
Nanchang CJ-6A, N147M carries construction number 4232020. (The first two digits of the construction number appear to be reversed in the FAA registration database.)
North American T-28A Trojan, N81643 served the Air Force as 49-1643. Its construction number is 159-155. Norman B. Dennis Jr. of Brookneal, California registered it as N9674C in 1966. Robert Eggmann of Belleville, Illinois registered it as N28RE in 1978. Edward A. Buerckholtz of Chesterfield, Missouri registered it as N81643 in 1985. It has been registered to Round Power Limited of Reno, Nevada since March 4, 2004. It is restored in the colors of a T-28A that was flown by the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in the 1950s. It is based at the Santa Barbara Airport.
Polish WA PZL/WSK MIELEC TS-11 Iskra, N615DW has been owned by D and J Aircraft Inc. of Santa Paulea since 2000. Iskra is the Polish word for "Spark"
Elmer Ward's North American P-51D Mustang, NL44727 Man-O'-War originally carried Army Air Force serial 44-72739. Its North American construction number is 122-39198. For a number of years it sat in open storage on the Universal Studios lot until Ascher Ward of Van Nuys, California recovered it in August 1970 and registered it as N44727 in 1971. For a while it was named Poontang. Elmer Ward acquired it in 1975 and restored it to the appearance of his original WW-II mount, 44-14292.
North American B-25J Mitchell, N30801 Executive Sweet is undergoing maintenance and is expected to return to flight status this summer. It has been registered to the American Aeronautical Foundation of Thousand Oaks since July 1985. Its Army Air Force serial number was 44-30801 and its North American construction number is 108-35126. It was converted to the TB-25N configuration before its retirement by the Air Force. It was retired in 1958 and stored at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Fogle Aircraft of Tucson, Arizona registered it as N3699G on September 9, 1959. Christler and Avery Aviation of Greybull, Wyoming bought it in January 1960 and converted it to an aerial sprayer. Filmways Incorporated of Hollywood acquired it in 1968 and restored it as Vestal Virgin for the movie Catch-22. Tallmantz Aviation of Orange County, California bought it in August 1971. Ed Schnepf and Challenge Publications of Van Nuys, California bought it in February 1972 and changed its registration to N30801 in 1978.
Polish built Wsk-Pzl-Mielec TS-11 Iskra, N226SB is registered to D and J Aircraft of Santa Paula. It was built in 1970.
North American T-28C Trojan, N28XC was delivered to the U. S. Navy as BuNo 140514 in 1954.
North American T-28C Trojan, N944SD Tough Old Bird was delivered to the U. S. Navy as BuNo 140531 in 1954. Courtesy Aircraft Incorporated of Rockford, Ilinois registered it as N91550 in November 1987. Stuart W. Dingman of Belleville, Michigan registered it as N944SD in September 1989. Kurt Kohler of Camarillo bought it in January 2007 and has changed its registration to N531KG.
Ventura County Sheriff Bell HH-1H Huey N205SD #6 was delivered to the U.S. Army as 70-2472.
American Champion 7EC N117CA light sport airplane.
Vertol H-21B Shawnee, N64606 flew for the Army as 54-4001. It is registered to the Classic Rotors Museum at the Ramona Airport.
North American Navion, N4443K was built in 1948. Its North American construction number is NAV-4-1443.
Beech C-45H N314WN is restored as a Marine Corps SNB instrument trainer assigned to MCAS El Toro. Its construction number is AF.566 and it was delivered to the Air Force as 52-10636.
Clay Lacy Corporation's Douglas DC-3C, N814CL Mainliner O'Connor is restored in the colors of United Airlines. Its Douglas construction number is 34370, and it was built in 1945.

C-53D, N45366 carries Douglas construction number is 11757. It was delivered to the Army Air Corps as C-53D, 42-68830. It is in the collection of the Inland Empire Wing of the Commemorative Air Force at the Riverside, California Airport.
