Air Traffic at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, April 13, 2006 |
I was in Arizona for over a week touring the airports in the vicinity of Phoenix. I visited Sky Harbor International Airport, Williams-Gateway Airport, Luke Air Force Base, Goodyear Airport, and Falcon Field.
On Thursday, April 13, I parked on the south bank of the Salt River at the end of 40th Street to photograph the departures from Runway 07L. Airport security will call the Phoenix Police to roust photographers that they see taking pictures from this location.

After I had been parked on the riverbank for about three hours, two police cars pulled up. One drove a short distance away along the riverbank. A police officer got out of the other car to tell me that I couldn't sit there taking pictures of the airplanes a quarter-mile from the airport. The officer informed me that airport security had directed them to run me off. She drove over to where the other police car had parked as I packed my gear.
Just as I was about to leave, the police cars came back by on their way to 40th street. The second officer approached my car and asked what camera gear I was using, how well it focused, and what was my opinion about the relative qualities of Nikon versus Canon digital cameras.
In California, many airports provide a place for the public to photograph the airplanes.
