Gentoo Penguins were the most widely distributed species that we saw on the voyage. They were the only species that we saw both in the Falkland Islands and in the Antarctic. We saw them on Carcass Island, Volunteer Point on East Falkland Island, Cape Lookout on Elephant Island, Andvord Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula, and Hannah Point on Livingtone Island.
The Gentoo Penguin rookery on Carcass island was located a fair distance from the beach. Gentoo Penguins have orange beaks and orange feet. They have white spots on either side of their head that are joined by a white stripe over the top of the head. They don't build nests or dig burrows.
They stand, clustered in colonies.
As we approached the colony, a group of Gentoo Penguins that had been on the other side of the trail from the colony came running down the hill. They charged right through the middle of our group, as fast as their stubby little penguin feet could carry them, to join the other penguins.
Gentoo Penguins are easily distinguished by their orange feet and white head spots.
This Gentoo Penguin is sharing the rocky beach at Cape Lookout with a female Southern Elephant.
There is a Gentoo Penguin rookery located on the rocks above the beach at Neko Harbor in Andvord Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Adult Gentoo Penguins eventually work their way to the rookery farther up the hill near the foot of a small glacier. The chicks are all located up at the rookery.
Gentoo Penguins generally maintain a larger personal space than some of the other species of Penguins.
Feeding chases happening all the time in the rookeries. Pairs of fat, gray and white, down-covered Gentoo Penguin chicks chase slender black and white adults in order to get their ration of krill. The chicks are fatter than the adult penguins and they are nearly as tall.
A Gentoo Penguin parent regurgitates another meal of krill into its chick's mouth.
A Chinstrap Penguin and a Gentoo Penguin encounter each other at the boundary between the rookeries.
