Most of the pre-production Lockheed-Martin F-22 Engineering, Manufacture, and Development Raptors have appeared at the Edwards Air Force Base Open House. Production Representative Test Vehicle F/A-22A Raptors and early production F/A-22A Raptors were first assigned to Nellis Air Force Base in 2003.
The first of two prototype Lockheed-Martin YF-22 Raptors, N22YF wore the fictitious serial number 86-022 and the WA tail code of the 57th Wing when it was first displayed to the public at the Nellis Air Force Base Golden Air Tattoo on April 25, 1997.

The second Lockheed-Martin F-22A Engineering, Manufacture, and Development (EMD) Raptor,
91-4002, made its first public appearance at the 1998 Edwards AFB Open
House.
91-4001 was the first of nine Engineering, Manufacture, and Development Raptors. It was grounded permanently on Nov 2, 2000 and is now the subject of battle damage survivability tests.

There were four F/A-22A Raptors assigned to the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron (TES) of the 53rd Test and Evaluation Group (TEG) based at Nellis Air Force Base in September 2003.
The reflective properties of the surface coating of the Raptor
were distinctively different from the usual matte gray finish of
the other fighters in the pattern. It will be tricky to reproduce
the finish on a scale model.
I managed to try out three shooting locations before the
Raptor made its full stop landing. While I wasn't as close
to the runway as I used to get, I got some usable pictures in the
low angle illumination of the early morning.
The edges of the flight surfaces and the engine inlets are
covered in low-observable materials.
