Bryce Canyon, September 2003 |

I stayed in a cabin at Bryce Canyon in early September 2003. It was just a five-hundred foot walk from the cabin to the rim at a location between Sunrise Point and Sunset Point. During the first night, a howling wind blew through the forest for a while before a deluge of rain pounded the park, accompanied by frequent lightning strikes. I counted two seconds between the flash of one lightning bolt and the clap of thunder that followed it.

I hiked down the Fairyland Canyon Trail and returned up the Sunrise Point Trail in Bryce Canyon. It's a six mile hike with an 800 foot ascent in the last 1.7 miles.

I could hear thunder from lightning striking a few miles to the north during the last part of the ascent.
