An LGM-30 Minuteman-II missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in support of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense Segment of the National Missile Defense program at 7:40 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time on Saturday, July 14, 2001.
The launch occurred just before sunset. I blocked the sun with my chair.
After the sun went down the exhaust trail was still brightly illuminated.
High altitude winds quickly twisted the exhaust into a convoluted, spiralling network.

There were spectacular colors visible in the lower portion of the exhaust trail that may have been from the first stage separation.
The colorful part of the exhaust trail exhibited condensation and precipitation, like virga from clouds over the desert.
